The La Trobe University Student Union (LTSU) is the peak independent representative body for all students, both undergraduate and post-graduate at the Melbourne, Shepparton and Mildura campuses. The LTSU represents the opinions and interests of students in a wide range of forums, both on campus on university committees and in meetings with university administration, and off campus in the wider community. Although LTSU is a membership based organisation, with members receiving numerous benefits and discounts on and off campus, all students are represented by seven general members and eleven office bearers elected each year in week-long elections. The portfolios include; President, General Secretary and the office bearers in charge of activist departments; Education Vice-President, Post-Graduate officer, Welfare officer, Women’s officer, Activities officer, Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander officer, Environment officer, Disabilities officer and Queer officer. Editors for the student run newspaper Rabelais are also elected in the LTSU elections.

The LTSU provides many vital services to students, both academic related; such as an independent advocacy service and a second hand bookshop, and services related to making La Trobe an exciting and fun place to be. The LTSU funds and administers:

• Clubs and Societies
• Rabelais
• Activities and Entertainment
• Student Advocacy
• 2nd Hand Bookshop
• The Age and News Limited newspaper subscriptions
• Free breakfast through the Breakfast Club
• Student Lounge
• Student Representative Network

If students ever have any difficulties, the LTSU will always help out in any way that we can. All our office bearers are students from all across the university and are more than willing to utilise their resources to alleviate students’ problems, great or small, through action at a campus level, or at a national level through the National Union of Students (NUS), the peak representative body for students in Australia.
